雍正年間以前，大溪地區是泰雅族的勢力範圍。嘉慶二十三年(1818年)，板橋林家舉家遷徙至此，在他們的開發下，原本的農業聚落轉型為商業市街。進入日治時期後，在大正八年(1919年)實施市街改正，有眾多店家的和平路一帶，成了主要改建重點。而在這波改建當中，向日本人學習過泥匠技藝的陳旺來、陳三川兄弟，將常用於廟宇的剪黏與交趾燒應用在牌樓厝的立面上，引來其他人爭相仿效，而使得大溪老街的街屋充滿了繁複的裝飾。

大溪老街 普濟堂
特色：位於桃園大溪老街上的百年廟宇，創立於民前十年壬寅之歲。每年農曆六月二十四日是關聖帝君聖誕，普濟堂都會主辦關聖帝君聖誕繞境活動，是大溪鎮每年最盛大的廟宇慶典活動，也是北台灣最重要最盛大的廟會活動。
